What Do Electrical Components Consist Of?

When you mention the word electrical, many people tend to steer away from it as electricity has been a general fear of many people. However once you start to break it down and begin to understand the components, your outlook changes completely.

What are the electronic components? The following components that you can get from electrical cable suppliers are among the most common found in electronic devices:

  • Microcontroller
  • Transformer
  • Battery
  • Fuse
  • Relays
  • Switches
  • Motors
  • Circuit Breakers

What are electronic components used for? Microcomputers are tiny computers used to control a large number of devices, such as power tools, remote controls, medical equipment and office machines. Batteries then change chemical energy to electrical energy which us used by us the end user. The two different cells of a battery are known as the positive (+) and negative (-).

Fuses act as a defensive mechanism that saves components from overloading with too much current. A fuse is made up of the following fixtures, connection body, support, contacts and metal-fuse material such as Zinc or copper. For more protection, a circuit breaker is used which can be controlled with a remote switch, it’s added to add extra protection from a short circuit.

Switches stop and break the current. You get four different types of switches, namely: single pole single throw (SPST), single pole double throw (SPDT), double pole single throw (DPST) and double pole double throw (DPDT).

Relays are basically electromechanical switches that shut power on or off. A relay is made up of an electromagnet, an armature, a series of electrical contacts, and a spring.

Motors act as an electrical conversion of energy into mechanical. The main components include a rotor, stator, bearings, conduit box, enclosure, and eye bolt. Items such as hairdryers, blenders and home entertainment equipment use motors.

In the next article we will be looking at active and passive components in electronics. Stay tuned and keep your thinking cap on!
